The Importance of Understanding Childhood Obesity

Obesity is an issue that is difficult to address, especially for parents and their children. A new study is being done showing that 1 in 3 parents whose children were referred to an obesity clinic did not think their child was overweight. Dr. Kyung Rhee, an assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of California School of Medicine, says that parents often think their child will grow out of their “chubby” phase and that parents have a perception that obesity is becoming normal.

In another study, researchers surveyed 202 parents of children, ages ranging between 5 to 20, that were sent to an obesity clinic. Out of the children of the 202 parents, 94% were obese.  After becoming aware that their child was obese, parents are starting to encourage healthy eating habits and exercise routines.
